The Arts at Hidden ValleyOur longtime interest in connecting young people to the arts represents an even deeper commitment to the following values:Expression: Exploring the world of feeling and developing one’s own personal voice or vision. Identity: The arts can help young people discover what they believe in. Persistence: Young artists persevere throughout the creative process. Connections: The arts allow creative young people to befriend other like-minded children and adolescents. And there's more: Young artists practice skills of Observation, Reflection, and Innovation. This really truly happens! According to one study, "Students who study the arts seriously are taught to see better, to envision, to persist, to be playful and learn from mistakes, to make critical judgments and justify such judgments." Go to our arts philosophy page for details. Visual ArtsVisual Arts… At Hidden Valley, 10 studios host a deep program of wonderfully creative artistic experiences for children at all skill levels.Four stained glass shops produce a range of inventive two and three dimensional projects including window hangings, glass mosaics, fused glass jewelry, and more. Professional potters direct our large studio equipped with kick and electric wheels and three kilns. Campers create sculptures, mugs, bowls, tiles and other special projects. A modern darkroom, equipped with seven enlargers, is the foundation for a dynamic traditional photography program. Campers use our 35mm cameras and then develop and enlarge black & white images of all kinds. Other shops feature drawing and painting, clothing and fabric design, screen printing and more Theater Arts & Performing Arts
Theater Arts and the Performing Arts are important to so many of our young people, providing expression through many acting opportunities.HVC campers participate in three theater productions each session. Our young people construct sets, make costumes and pitch in backstage. Workshop classes in many aspects of writing and acting support a full and expressive program. Recent shows have included Grease, Little Shop of Horrors, Annie, Hairspray and all sorts of non-musical programs from around the world and Shakespearian times. Music ArtsMusic Arts: A wide range of musical opportunities take place throughout the camp session. Our recording studio is home to rock bands which perform for us. Guitar lessons, songwriting workshops and daily singing opportunities make HVC a community of musicians!Dance ArtsDance Arts are important to so many of our campers and Hidden Valley's fantastic instructors provide dozens of opportunities to work hard, create and perform.Enjoy magnificent studio time with professional dance teachers directing jazz, modern, tap and more. With teachers' guidance, campers also choreograph their own dances and then we all enjoy dance recitals each summer. |
